You will use VSAS to register for the main course or the two week SAR or backpack extra course.
Welcome to the University of Utah School of Medicine Wilderness Medicine course. The course is taught both on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and in incredible Moab, Utah. Here is some general information that you will find useful and necessary.
The class is taught in Room 1730 on the main floor of the Health Science Education Building, M,T,W,H nights from 6 - 9 pm for two weeks. A textbook will be handed out on the first night of the class. Your days are free unless you are required by your school to perform additional clinical time or research (see below).
A key component to the program is the hands-on learning activity. This can be done either in Moab, Utah, or near the medical school in Salt Lake City. We cover neck and spine managment, moving an injured patient, keeping an airway open, bandaging, splinting and other basic skills needed in back country medicine.

Moab Practical Skills Session
The practical skills portion of the course can be learned in Moab, Utah on the second Saturday of the course. The course will last almost all day. On Sunday there will be some optional courses that students may enroll in. Moab is approximately a 4 hour drive from Salt Lake City. If you don't have your own transportation, there will be room in other students' cars. You will need to bring your own camping gear if you plan on spending the night in Moab 'under the stars'. Camping gear is also available for rent here on the campus of the University of Utah.

This practical skills session will be offered on the second Saturday of the course for those who can't or don't want to travel to Moab. It will be held in the Matheson Preserve near the School of Medicine. Directions are on the web page under the Salt Lake Practical Skills icon.
There are a number of places for out of state students to stay. Craig's list is a good way to look for homes or apartments for rent. There are motels and hostels nearby. There are medical students with whom you can stay. On the first night of class we can make an announcement and there are always volunteers from students in the class where out of state students can stay.
