The Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) is considered to be the standard of wilderness medicine education. It is designed for medical professionals who want to certify in wilderness medicine but it can be used for a general wilderness medicine course. The University of Utah School of Medicine is home to the Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) certificate. Introduced in 1998, it has been taught every year since at this school.
AWLS certification
To earn the AWLS certification, students must pass the AWLS exam and the AWLS practical skills exam. The AWLS certification exam is given on line and the code to take the exam will be given later in the course. The test can be taken by clicking on the test icon to the right. You can start studying at anytime by following the guidelines at www.wildmedu.org
You will be required to take one session of practical skills. They can be done online or in person. The practical skills will be given in in person either in Moab or Salt Lake City or online at www.wildmedu,org . We will have sign up sheets and give locations and instructions closer to when the course starts if you are taking it in person.
Medicine of Outdoor Sports - This text covers the medicine of several outdoor sports that is important for wilderness medicine students to know. How do you prevent, treat and evacuate people involved in these sports. It also covers first aid kits for these sports. It is essentia medicine for anyone going into the backcountry or recreating in the outdoors.
Lectures
We will give live lectures at the University of Utah school of Medicine. chedule, This material is already available on line as textbooks, podcasts and practice tests at www.wildmedu.org. You should study these materials as outlined on the site in addition to coming to lectures.
Costs: There are no official additional costs for this course for students registered through VSAS. . If you go to Moab, we have reserved a camp site for the nights we teach. We also have dinner for one of the nights. You will need to share gas costs or the cost of extra food, or other costs of travel.
Housing: Housing is not provided, but there are many options. As we get closer to the course, we can have you communicate with others in the course for shared housing. Also, there are typical housing options.
